**Exploratory analysis of Brazilian sugarcane production, planted area and yield** ---- For this assignment, I performed an exploratory analysis in a database. For that, I choose the historical sugarcane production by municipalities, available by IBGE. The database contains information about yield, total sugarcane production, and area harvest by season. The data starts in 1994 and ends in 2021. {{:opensci:2023:rdatanal:explor:yield_changes.png?800|}} Figure 1. Trends in brazilian sugarcane production, planted area and yield Figure 2 presents the distribution of sugarcane production by municipalities. At the start of the time series, the production was concentrated in the state of São Paulo. However, all Brazilian states had municipalities with production. After 1990 some municipalities in the states of Mato Grosso do Sul and Minas Gerais. After 2000 Mato Grosso and the South of Goais showed productions area. In 2008 starts an increase in the number of municipalities with higher production mainly in the states of Minas Gerais, Goias, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul and North of Parana State. {{:opensci:2023:rdatanal:explor:gif_sugarcane_production.gif?1200|}} Figure 2. Evolution of Brazilian sugarcane production by municipalities Figure 3 shows the trends in sugarcane production by states in Brazil. The start of the series, 1975, had São Paulo as the main production, followed by, Pernambuco and Alagoas. These three states stay in the top three until 1990. After that Parana and Minas Gerais states changed positions with Alagoas and Pernambuco. After 2008 the production had a big increase. With that, the states Mato Grosso do Sul, Goias and Minas Gerais change positions in the top three states. In the last season, 2021, the three main production states was São Paulo, Goiás and Minas Gerais. {{:opensci:2023:rdatanal:explor:bar_plot_uf_prod.gif?800|}} Figure 3.
